Ask an Aquanaut: Communications

Michael asks: Can you use wireless devices to communicate inside the station, or with persons in the water/topside? Or is everything hard wired for communications?

Michael, we can and do use wireless comm’s both topside to aquarius and in the water for divers. We have a wireless link from the shore base to a large life support buoy (LSB) that runs a 155Mbps wireless bridge. From the LSB we then are hardwired to the Aquarius. We have wireless technology inside aquarius to allow for more workstations because of limited space.

As for underwater comm’s we frequently use wireless communication devices between our divers and aquarius. With this particular configuration we have the capability via any phone line to have 2 way communication with a diver.
